Short description
This sculpture came from the collection of the opera singer Gennaro Evangelista (called Evan) Gorga, which was given to the Italian state in 1948 and was intended for the most part for the Palazzo Venezia museum. Identified by number 126 in Gorga’s collection, the work depicts a man, with glass eyes, dressed in military uniform; the polychromy is still vivid and the work is sculpted in detail, even under the sole of the foot. It is in poor condition though, missing both arms and the right leg, and other parts, such as the head, ought to be adjustable. It is difficult to surmise the purpose of the object, perhaps part of a nativity scene or a crucifixion scene, but it can be dated to 18th century Rome.
