Sculpture Collections - Getty Research

Progetto GettyIn 2008, the Soprintendenza Speciale per il Patrimonio Storico Artistico ed Etnoantropologico e per il Polo Museale della Città di Roma - National Museum of the Palazzo di Venezia was awarded research funding financed by the Getty Foundation in Los Angeles for the study of the scuplture collections located in the museum. Responsible for the research project are the Superintendent of Fine Arts, Rossella Vodret, and the Art Historian Officer Maria Giulia Barberini.

Six hundred and forty-five works of art, including wooden, bronze and terracotta sculptures will be studied through in-depth historical and artistic research. Responsible for the investigations are: Maria Giulia Barberini, for the study of the documentary sources concerning the Palazzo di Venezia and its collections; Matilde de Angelis d'Ossat (Director of the National Roman Museum - Palazzo Altemps) for the archaeological collections owned by the Cardinals Barbo and Grimani; Grazia Maria Fachechi (University of Urbino "Carlo Bo") for the wooden sculptures; Pietro Cannata for the bronze sculptures; Cristiano Giometti (University of Pisa) for the terracotta sculptures.

The historical and artistic research will be supported by technical and scientific investigations as well in collaboration with important research institutes.

The research project will end in August 2010 and the findings reached through this process of study will be published, targeted in particular at those whose for whom art history is a professional concern, in lieu of Public Conferences which will be a place for debates among Italian and foreign art historians, researchers and restorers.

Deatils of the sculptures and their related images are available on the Soprintendenza web-site. Subsequently, four catalogues will be published (historical sources and documents concerning the Palazzo di Venezia and its archaeological collections, wooden, bronze and terracotta sculptures).
