Short description
As with many wood sculptures now at Palazzo Venezia, this work also came from the collection of George Washington Wurts (1843-1928), an American diplomat, whose collection was donated by his wife Henriette Tower to the Italian state in 1933 (W 1184/2). The statuette depicts an old man with a long beard, wearing a hat and holding a stick and a flask, which mark him out as a wayfarer, as do the schematically rendered pets that are visible on the round base where his feet are placed. This figure, which forms a pair with another statuette of a man carrying a basket (PV 7940/1), is made from wood and some metal parts, and was part, in all probability, of a nativity scene made in Germany in the first quarter of the 20th century.
