Short description

As with many wood sculptures now at Palazzo Venezia, this work also came from the collection of George Washington Wurts (1843-1928), an American diplomat, whose collection was donated by his wife Henriette Tower to the Italian state in 1933 (W 1184/1). The statuette depicts a young man, wearing a cap and holding a set of pipes, as he carries a basket, on an octagonal base decorated with plant-like motifs. This figure, which forms a pair with another statuette of a man carrying a basket in the museum (PV 7940/2), is made from wood and some metal parts (for example the small medals that hang from the basket), and was part, in all probability, of a nativity scene made in Germany in the first quarter of the 20th century.
