Short description
This bronze, together with three others fused in similar fashion in Russia in the late 19th century, entered the Palazzo Venezia collection in 1933. The works came from the sizeable collection acquired in Russia by the American George Wurts, before he moved to Rome from St. Petersburg in 1883. The base is rather unsual, consisting of a hemispheric cap made with bronze foil and punched so as to represent the ground; in the other Russian statues of this period bases depicting very uneven terrain were always fused together with the soldier who rides a horse. It is unlikely that this group and its base were made by the same artist.
