Short description
As with many wood sculptures now at Palazzo Venezia, this work also came from the collection of George Washington Wurts (1843-1928), an American diplomat, whose collection was donated by his wife Henriette Tower to the Italian state in 1933 (W 373). It is difficult to surmise the original context of this fragment. It depicts the dark face of a putto, framed by soft golden ringlets, with outspread wings that are also golden; its style is reminiscent of Roman sculpture of the 17th century.
