Short description
This unpublished statuette, which came from the Wurts collection (inv. W377/1), depicts an angel, and forms a pair with its mirror image, inventory no. PV 7614/1. The angel, whose ringlets of hair brush against its shoulders, ought to hold a scroll, as the arched position of the body and the arrangement of the hands suggest; it was perhaps originally intended to hang as part of an altarpiece, as the flat reverse side, with a hook, indicates. The rather disproportionate rendering of the figure and the simple modelling suggest it was produced in an artisanal workshop in 16th century Germany.
